Olive Gray

I chose a color called Olive Gray by Olympic for the hall area of the house. I painted the downstairs hall, stairwell, and upstairs landing.

With the 10 foot ceilings, it took a good while. I had to hand edge the walls at the ceiling because the molding was too thin for an edger. I have yet to paint the trim and ceiling in this room. You can tell because the door frame isn't painted and I haven't fixed the unpainted molding.

I like this color. It's not quite green, not quite gray, not quite brown, not quite dark gold... It can't make up its mind. It also isn't too dark for the hall area. I really like our coat/umbrella stand. It finally has a place that works for it! (Thanks, Mrs. 5C!)

It transitions nicely from the living room and kitchen area, both of which are the vanilla brandy tan color. It appears orangey in this picture, but that's just because of the flash.

The banister is in progress. It needs a lot of help. Right now, all of the posts are a dingy off white. I'll fix that, but it will take forever. Heading upstairs:

The upstairs landing:

After all of that, I still had 3/4 of a bucket of paint left. So I decided I would balance the downstairs by painting the dining room (diagonal from the hallway) the same pretty olive. Now, you walk from olive to tan to olive to tan in the main rooms.

The dining room is a little darker because it has only one window on the north side of the house, so the color comes out a little off with the flash. All of the trim and baseboards in this room were wood, so I've got a few more coats of white to go before I'm done. In fact, I've got miles of trim to paint still. My poor fingers. I'm planning on putting up a chair rail and some boxes to give the lower half of the room depth and dimension. I have yet to decide if I will paint the lower half a color or leave it white. I'll decide when I get the molding up.

The room is a rectangle except for this little mini hallway. I'd like to take it down, as it serves no purpose, but the Professor is worried about the plaster walls. I guess I agree with him as far as the danger to the walls, but I still think it would open the room up a little more. Oh, well. You can still see the door frames that I haven't painted in the mini hallway.

So that was 3 gallons of paint. Come to think of it, I didn't even use all of the 3 gallons. And I put up 2 coats. I think I like it. The Professor likes it and he doesn't care if the walls stay white or have color. We'll see if I feel the same in a year.

  1. I loooooove it. But 4 rooms in my house are green, so I'm biased. ;)
And that coat rack ROCKS! I forgot we gave that to you! :)

  2. Thanks! I'm getting used to not having white walls for the first time in my life. I like it too!
